20 Jahre nach den Protesten gegen den G8-Gipfel in Genua kamen Ende Juli 2021 Künstlergruppen aus Mailand und Berlin in die Stadt, um die Aktionstage und Demonstrationen anlässlich dieses Jahrestages zu unterstützen. Gegenüber dem Sozialen Zentrum Buridda im Zentrum von Genua und auch anderswo, malten sie ohne offizielle Genehmigung Wandbilder, die die Inhalte der Gipfelproteste langfristig sichtbar machen sollen. Momentaufnahmen damaliger und heutiger Kämpfe in Erinnerung an Carlo Giuliani.
Hunderttausende Demonstrant*innen kamen 2001 aus ganz Europa in die italienische Hafenstadt um den G8-Gipfel zu stören, der dort in einer abgeschotteten Hochsicherheitszone stattfand. Neben dem Erfolg, den großen Macht-Eliten eindrucksvoll gezeigt zu haben, dass offensiver Widerstand gegen ihre Politik möglich ist, war Genua auch wegen der heftigen Polizeigewalt ein einschneidendes und traumatisches Ereignis für viele Beteiligte.
Bei den gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzungen am Rande des Gipfels wurde der Demonstrant Carlo Giuliani von einem Polizisten getötet. Viele andere wurden von Polizisten schwer verletzt und nach ihrer Festnahme teilweise mehrere Tage gefoltert. Der italienische Staat zeigte in aller Öffentlichkeit sein faschistoides Gesicht.
Ziel der Aktionstage und der Wandbilder ist einerseits an die Proteste von damals zu erinnern. Andererseits zu zeigen, dass antikapitalistische Politik heute nicht weniger aktuell ist und sich Aktivist*innen nach wie vor auf der ganzen Welt vernetzen. Symbolisch besonders bedeutend ist der anstehende Besuch einer Delegation der Zapatisten aus Mexiko. Diese aufständische indigene Bewegung aus dem Bundesstaat Chiapas hatte andere Aktivist*innen auf der ganzen Welt inspiriert. Nun reisen Einzelne von ihnen erstmals durch Europa, um sich mit lokalen Verbündeten auszutauschen. Die Fotos sind von der Willkommens-Demonstration für die Zapatistas am 18. Juli 2021 in Genua. Weil Frankreich ihnen die Durchreise verweigerte, konnten sie selbst nicht teilnehmen.
Das Wandbild der Gruppe „Volkswriterz“ zeigt eine Auswahl von politischen Kämpfen, die mit den Gipfelprotesten von 2001 in direkten Bezug stehen. Neben einem Portrait Carlo Giulianis, ist der Moment kurz vor seinem Tod zu sehen, in dem er einen Feuerlöscher auf ein Carabinieri-Auto wirft. Daneben u.a. der Streik der Hafenarbeiter*innen von Genua, die im Mai 2019 ein Schiff mit einer Waffenlieferung für Saudi-Arabien blockiert haben, zapatistische Aktivistinnen und eine Kämpferin aus Rojava.
War die Parole gegen den G8-Gipfel damals „Eine andere Welt ist möglich“, stehen die Aktionstage nun im Angesicht von wirtschaftlichen Krisen, Klimawandel und politischem Rechtsruck unter dem Motto: „Eine andere Welt ist notwendig“.

20 years after the protests against the G8 summit in Genoa, groups of artists from Berlin and Milan came to the city at the end of July 2021 to support the days of action and demonstrations on the occasion of this anniversary. Among others, across from the Social Center Buridda in the center of the city, they painted murals without official permission, which should make the content of the summit protests visible in the long term.
In 2001 Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators came from all over Europe to the Italian port city to disrupt the G8 summit, which was held there in a sealed-off high-security zone. In addition to the success of having impressively shown the big power elites that offensive resistance to their policies is possible, Genoa was also a drastic and traumatic event for many of those involved because of the fierce police violence.
During the riots the activist Carlo Giuliani was killed by a police officer. Many others were seriously injured by police officers and tortured for several days after their arrest. The Italian state showed its fascistoid face in public.
The aim of the current action days and the murals is on the one hand to remember the protests of that time. On the other hand to show that anti-capitalist politics are no less relevant today and that activists are still networking all over the world. Symbolically the upcoming visit of a delegation of Zapatistas from Mexico is particularly significant. This rebellious indigenous movement from the state of Chiapas had inspired other activists around the world. Now, for the first time, a group of them is traveling through Europe to exchange ideas with local allies. The Fotos are from the welcome demonstration for the zapatistas, 18th of july 2021.
The mural of the group „Volkswriterz“ shows a selection of political struggles directly related to the 2001 summit protests. Next to a portrait of Carlo Giuliani, the moment shortly before his death can be seen in which he throws a fire extinguisher at a carabinieri car. In addition, among others, the strike of the dockers of Genoa, who blocked a ship with a shipment of weapons for Saudi Arabia in May 2019, Zapatista activists and a fighter from Rojava.
While the slogan against the G8 summit was „Another world is possible“ back then, the action days now have the motto „Another world is necessary“ in the face of economic crises, climate change and a political shift to the right.
